MORIGAON, Aug 8: The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm at Bihutoli Auditorium, Morigaon, Assam, organised by the North East People’s Development Federation (NEPDF), Assam, under the sponsored program of the Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, in association with the Tiwa Autonomous Council, Government of Assam, on August 7, 2025.
The day-long celebration aimed to honor and promote the contributions of the handloom weaving community, acknowledging their pivotal role in the nation’s socio-economic development.
The event drew participation from thousands of weavers and local residents, along with dignitaries including Pranab Jyoti Mosrong, Executive Member, and Ajit Deka, Member of Tiwa Autonomous Council; Orpah Baglary, Principal Secretary, Tiwa Autonomous Council & Chairperson, NEPDF; N N Rana Patgiri, Principal Advisor, NEPDF and former senior official in the Handloom & Textiles sector; Chetana Das, Eminent Assamese Cine Artiste; Nirupam Roychoudhury, I/C Assistant Director, Sericulture, Govt. of Assam, Morigaon; Kamal Kumar Baruah, Additional Director, NEPDF; and Bidyut Rana Patgiri, Director & CEO, NEPDF.
A highlight was the inauguration of a 45-day Skill Development Training on Handloom Weaving under the SAMARTH Scheme by the Weavers’ Service Centre, Guwahati, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, in collaboration with NEPDF.
The inauguration was graced by Binda Bordoloi, Ex-Executive Member, Tiwa Autonomous Council; Phuleswari Das, Member, Bhurbandha Anchalik Panchayat; Phulsing Das, President, Bhagavad Gita Satra, Bhatkhowabori; officials from the Weavers’ Service Centre and NEPDF; Master Trainers; and other guests.
The program featured a facilitation ceremony honoring handloom weavers nominated by the Office of the Assistant Director, Handloom & Textiles, Morigaon.
An Exclusive Exhibition-cum-Sale was organised from August 5 for five days, with participation from 20 Handloom Weavers, Entrepreneurs, SHGs, and Societies.
A Seminar-cum-Workshop was conducted, with sessions led by Praneeta Baruah, Assistant Director, Handloom & Textiles, on Marketing of Assam Handlooms, and Shyamal Kumar Saikia, Assistant Education Officer, Assam Cooperative Union, on Formation of Cooperative Societies in Tiwa Autonomous Council areas.
The day included a vibrant cultural program showcasing the region’s rich heritage, with traditional dance performances, a Fashion Show on Assam Handloom, Classical Dance Presentations, and Chorus Performances.
The day concluded with a resounding message of pride and commitment towards sustaining the heritage of handlooms.
