KHERONI, Feb 23: Intense rainfall and heavy hail storm gripped several hilly areas, including the remote village of Langhemphi, located 32 kms from Hamren, the district headquarters of West Karbi Anglong, near the Assam-Meghalaya border. Similar conditions have been reported across several parts of Baithalangso and Zerikingding areas, with plummeting temperatures and roads disrupting daily life and isolating communities.
Local residents confirmed that the continuous hail storm over a few hours has led to a sharp decline in temperatures, with mountain areas recording sub-zero conditions. A thick layer of ice and snow has rendered key roads impassable, particularly in elevated zones, stranding residents and halting vehicular movement.
In Baithalangso, similar challenges have been reported, with rainfall compounding difficulties in lower-altitude areas. The region’s typically rugged terrain has become increasingly hazardous. Regional Meteorological Centre Guwahati have issued forecasts suggest the hail storm and rain may persist over the next 24–48 hours, prolonging the crisis, rainfall may continue for few days across the state.
