GUWAHATI, June 18: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently wrote to his counterpart in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, requesting the transfer of the untimely death case of an IIT Kharagpur student from Tinsukia to the CBI.

Faizan Ahmed was found dead in his hostel room on October 14, 2022. Earlier, on October 20, 2022, CM Sarma sought Banerjee’s intervention to conduct a thorough investigation into the case.

Sarma reminded Mamata that the deceased’s parents discovered injury marks on his body, suggesting possible homicide, which contradicted the college authority’s initial claim of suicide.

“Late Faizan Ahmed was found dead in his hostel room on October 14th, 2022. Although the college authorities initially declared it a suicide, his grieving parents observed injury marks on his body, indicating a potential homicide. Therefore, I had requested your intervention for a thorough investigation into the unnatural death of this promising young student,” Sarma wrote in the letter.

Detailing the findings of a forensic report in a letter dated June 17 from the CMO office, Sarma stated that a second autopsy, as directed by the Calcutta High Court, revealed a gunshot wound on the upper left side of Ahmed’s neck and a stab wound on the right side.

“In view of the shocking findings of the latest forensic report, it is imperative that the perpetrators of the horrific crime as well as any other person involved in concealing the crime, are brought to book, thereby ensuring justice to the deceased and closure to the grief stricken parents. I, therefore, request you to kindly hand over the case to the CBI for a transparent and fair investigation of the crime,” Sarma added.
