Hiren Baruah’s death casts shadow of gloom

MANGALDAI, Feb 23: Hiren Baruah (51), a resident of Puniya in Mangaldai and a former teacher, journalist, artist, and social worker, passed away on Monday around 1 pm after prolonged illness.

According to family sources, Baruah had been suffering from diabetes and kidney disease for some time but was unable to undergo advanced treatment due to financial constraints.

He began his journalism career with the weekly Mangal Batori published from Mangaldai and later contributed to several online news portals.

Besides his professional work, he was actively involved in social service.

He was associated with humanitarian organisations such as Karunadhara and Ashaar Aalok – Manuhhe Manuhor Babe in Darrang district, dedicating much of his time to community welfare.

He was also a member of the Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva-Chhatra Parishad.

His demise has cast a pall of grief across Mangaldai.

Several public figures and organisations have expressed condolences, including MLA Basanta Das, former MLA Gurujyoti Das, Mangaldai Nagar Unnayan Pradhikaran Chairman Pratap Bordoloi, Karunadhara Darrang District Sahayak Samiti president Mukul Chandra Deka and general secretary Ganesh Dutta, and leaders of Ashaar Aalok – Manuhhe Manuhor Babe.

The chief editor of Mangal Batori, Prashanta Baruah, along with members of various local organisations and residents of Puniya, also mourned his passing.

He is survived by his wife and several relatives.
