JORHAT, Jan 28: Under the initiative of Pragya and with the active cooperation of the people of Jorhat, the historical drama “Mahanayak Maharaj Prithu”, based on the life and valour of Assam’s legendary warrior king Maharaj Prithu, will be staged on January 30 at the Jorhat District Sports Association Playground.
The announcement was made at a press conference held at the Jorhat Press Club on Tuesday. Addressing the media, Organising Committee president Shantanu Pujari said that Maharaj Prithu was among the most courageous military commanders not only in the history of Assam but also of India. He said that in 1226 AD, Maharaj Prithu successfully drove away foreign invaders from the northeastern region of Assam, but despite his immense contribution and reign as king of ancient Kamarupa, his legacy remains largely overlooked in mainstream history.
The drama has been written by noted playwright Hillol Kumar Pathak and directed by eminent theatre personality Asim Krishna Barua. The production has already received wide appreciation after being staged in various parts of Assam.
The organisers said the objective of staging the play is to present the glorious chapters of Assam’s history before the younger generation and to instil patriotism, courage and pride in the state’s rich heritage.
Although amateur theatre has seen a decline in recent years, elaborate arrangements have been made to accommodate around 3,000 spectators so that audiences can experience live theatre collectively. Several well-known actors and actresses from across Assam will perform in the drama.
The play will be staged at 6 PM on January 30 and will be free and open to the general public.
Pujari further said that an organising committee has been formed with Shantanu Pujari as president, Diganta Dutta as working president and Pradyumna Bora and Manoj Bora as secretaries. He appealed to the people of Jorhat to extend cooperation for the successful conduct of the programme.
It was also announced that on the same day, artists who are beneficiaries of the Assam Government Artist Pension Scheme and those who have received one-time financial assistance will be felicitated for their contributions to the cultural field. The press conference was attended by Dipak Nath, president of Pragya Jorhat District Committee, Ashish Kashyap, secretary and other office bearers of the organisation.
