The incident, stemming from internal rivalries, has sparked outrage and prompted a police investigation.

The conflict arose during a meeting to elect the chairman of the Besimari Development Block regional panchayat.

Of the 14 members present—11 from Congress, one from BJP, and two independents—two Congress leaders, Suleman Ali and Hamidur Rahman, contested for the chairman’s post.

The vote resulted in a 7-7 tie, and the election officer declared Hamidur Rahman the winner through a coin toss.

The outcome infuriated supporters of Suleman Ali, including Besimari Zila Parishad member Mahibuddin Ahmed and former Zila Parishad member Ainul Haque.

Suspecting cross-voting, they allegedly targeted Congress Zonal Member Jasmine Begum and her husband, Abdul Hakim.

The couple was reportedly forced into a car, taken to Mahibuddin Ahmed’s residence, and physically assaulted.

Dalgaon Police intervened promptly, rescuing the injured couple and ensuring they received medical treatment.
