IOCL and Rotary Club empower visually impaired with smart vision glasses

GUWAHATI, June 28: Indian Oil Corporation, in association with the Rotary Club of Guwahati Metro, held a function for the distribution of Smart Vision Glasses (SVG) at Lohia Lions Gauhati Auditorium, Guwahati, on Friday. During the event, 90 pieces of Smart Vision Glasses (SVG) were distributed free of charge to the visually impaired students and teachers of government schools of Guwahati, Nagaon, Bihpuria (North Lakhimpur), along with students of Cotton University. After the distribution, the beneficiaries were trained to use the device by technicians from the manufacturer.

SVG is a life-changing device for the visually challenged. It works with Artificial Intelligence. This device scans and converts text to audio. The device also enables them to read (hear) books in 73 Indian regional languages, including Assamese and Hindi. The user can also read handwritten materials.

The chief guest of the function was G Ramesh, executive director & state head of IndianOil AOD State Office. The project has been fully financed by Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) under a CSR initiative. Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta was the guest of honour. Rajesh Nambiar, executive director (Retail Sales) IOAOD SO, was the special guest of the function. Saurav Chaliha, GM (HR), Diganta Thakuria, DGM (HR-CSR), Kuntal Mukherji, GM (RS), and Surendra H Yadav, senior GM (Finance), officers from IOCL, and Rtn Prabhat Kedia, chairman of Rotary District 3240 Trust, Rtn Satish Kasera, assistant governor, Rtn RP Sureka, president, and Rtn SL Agarwal, secretary of Rotary Club of Guwahati Metro shared the dais.

During the speech and interview, Rtn Rajendra Prasad Sureka, president of the club, thanked IndianOil for reposing faith in the club and granting the CSR fund. He informed that another camp for the distribution of SVG will be held at Jorhat Blind School on June 30, 2024 (Sunday) with 27 beneficiaries. He thanked members of his club for sponsoring 20 smartphones for those blind students who do not have smartphones, as without them the SVG device does not work. The president has committed to giving 10 such devices to the students and teachers of private blind schools whose names are not on the list. The president thanked G Ramesh, Rajesh Nambiar, Kuntal Mukherji, Surendra H Yadav, and officers of the finance department, Diganta Thakuria, and Saurav Chaliha, who helped a lot in implementing this project in a very short span of time. He informed that Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, director of Social Justice & Empowerment, had helped RC Guwahati Metro in getting the list of beneficiaries and in making this project successful. He also informed that he met Virendra Mittal, commissioner and secretary of Social Justice & Empowerment, who could not grace the occasion but assured that he will always help and work with the club in doing mega projects to help people with physical disabilities who want our love and care.

The executive director & state head of IOAOD SO, G Ramesh, in his speech, informed the gathering about IOCL and the mega projects IOCL is taking under its CSR initiative. He praised the club for taking up this mega project, which will be life-changing for the blind students and teachers, and assured the club of IOCL’s support in such noble projects in the future for the brothers and sisters of the society who want our support and love.

The executive director (RS), Rajesh Nambiar, also praised the initiative taken for implementing this mega project and making it successful despite so many hurdles of distance and contacting the beneficiaries.
