GUWAHATI, Nov 22: The JD Institute of Fashion Technology celebrated the 20th edition of its Annual Design Awards on Friday at City Centre Mall, where 70 students from Fashion, Interior and Jewellery departments presented an impressive display of creativity and design innovation.
Marking two decades of design education in the Northeast, the institute showcased curated interior installations, a jewellery exhibition and a high-energy fashion show. The theme for this year, “Last Invention,” challenged students to imagine a world transformed by one final breakthrough—encouraging futuristic, sustainable concepts aimed at solving global problems.
Judges for the event included architect Ritul Sharma of Akriti, Managing Director Rupal Dalal, Director Harsh Dalal and the Centre Directors. Sharma applauded the interior design students for their sustainable prototypes, noting innovations such as acoustic panels made from mushroom material and lamps crafted from lemongrass, which naturally repels insects.
Echoing his appreciation, Rupal Dalal praised the fashion and jewellery departments for their bold experimentation, highlighting a fashion collection infused with natural fragrance that intensifies after each wash. Director Harsh Dalal acknowledged a standout jewellery line fashioned from repurposed broken tiles, turning discarded material into intricate wearable pieces.
Centre Directors Sumita Dey Deka and Ushmita Dey Hazarika congratulated the participants and the organising team for successfully presenting the landmark 20th edition. They said the event reflected the institute’s mission to nurture design talent through industry exposure, collaborations and public showcases.
The ceremony concluded with recognition of outstanding performers whose work best interpreted the theme “Last Invention”: Best Design Award: “The Earth Bound Essence” by Harshita Das and Dipshika Bharali (3rd Year, B.Voc Fashion Design), Best Design Award: “Mighty Architectonic” by Riter Doke (2nd Year, Advance Diploma in Fashion Design) and Best Design Award: “Eco Aura” by Sushilia Sonam (3rd Year, B.Voc Interior Design)
The evening ended with applause and appreciation as emerging designers received insights from industry leaders, reaffirming the institute’s commitment to shaping the future of design in the region.
