DIPHU, June 17: Karbi Anglong District Commissioner Aranyak Saikia on Wednesday reviewed the treatment of noted litterateur and Padma Shri awardee Rongbong Terang at Diphu Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) and later directed officials to intensify action against illegal mining across the district.
Saikia visited DMCH to assess the health condition of Terang, who was admitted to the hospital following a sudden health setback.
During the visit, the District Commissioner interacted with the veteran writer and conveyed his best wishes for a speedy recovery.
He also held discussions with the Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent of the hospital and directed the authorities to provide all necessary medical assistance, specialised care and support to ensure the author’s recovery.
Later in the day, the District Commissioner chaired a meeting of the District Mining Control Committee to review the status of illegal mining activities in various parts of Karbi Anglong.
During the meeting, Saikia reiterated the administration’s commitment to protecting natural resources and maintaining strict enforcement against unlawful extraction activities.
He directed all concerned departments to strengthen surveillance and intensify monitoring in vulnerable areas.
The District Commissioner instructed enforcement agencies to take immediate legal action against individuals or groups found involved in illegal mining and emphasised the need for strict implementation of existing laws and regulations.
He also called for enhanced inter-departmental coordination to curb illegal mining activities and safeguard the district’s ecological resources.
Officials from various departments attended the meeting and reviewed ongoing measures aimed at preventing illegal extraction and ensuring environmental protection across the district.
