Under Secretary, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and in charge DSW department, Deepanjit Baruah said by observing the international day for PWDs serves as a reminder of the global commitment to fostering inclusivity, advocating for the rights of PwDs, and creating equitable opportunities for all.

He emphasised that the government has launched various schemes for the welfare of PwDs and should come forward in taking the benefit.

Baruah also informed that the annual observance of International Day of disabled persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1992. The DSW department is there to help the PwDs with whatever possible means like informing welfare schemes dedicated for them, the process of filling up forms for getting disabled certificates from government and how to avail the opportunities given to them by government. There are Anganwadi workers and supervisors, who regularly visit homes to enquire about the problems and needs of the PwDs. Besides this the PwDs can come to DSW office for any queries and support needed.

The District Information & Public Relation Officer (DIPRO), Utpal Dimasa informed the PwDs present, where the Central government has introduced various welfare schemes for the uplift of PwDs.

“Schemes like Assistance to Disabled Persons for Purchase/ Fitting of Aids and Appliances (ADIP Scheme), Deendayal Disabled Rehabilitation Scheme, National Awards and National Scholarships for persons with disabilities, DISHA an early intervention and school readiness scheme for children with disabilities up to 10 years old, VIKAAS a day care scheme for people with disabilities above 10 years old and  SAMARTH a care scheme for people with disabilities from BPL and LIG families have been implemented by the government,” Dimasa said.

To be self confident in oneself and resilience the DIPRO said, “One should not be disheartened, but have a strong will power. Being disabled doesn’t mean incapable. There are many persons with disabilities, who are more successful than those who are fit and you have the capacity to do things.”

Dipen Saikia, one among the PwDs attending the observation informed the DSW in charge Baruah, where some disabled persons don’t have walking sticks. There are some PwDs whose names are not enrolled in the DSW department and are being deprived of the benefits from the government. With the suggestion made by Saikia the DSW in charge provided walking sticks to the disabled persons. PwDs Persons presented songs and dances at the programme.
