DIPHU, Sept 29: With rumours of child lifting happening for the last couple of weeks in Karbi Anglong, the Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum (KAWJF) convened a press conference here at its office on Thursday, where the president Beulet Beypi said people should be aware so that children do not fall prey to child trafficking.
She said if any strangers are noticed loitering around should inform the police. People should not take law into their own hands and if any unknown face is seen they can catch hold of the person and hand over to the police.
She urged parents and guardians to take concern of their children of where he/she is going and whom to meet. Such incidents are more in rural areas, she said.
On the other hand the O/c of Diphu Police Station, JS Khubung said such rumours of child lifters are circulated in social media like facebook and WhatsApp. But there is no such child lifter present. There may be strangers seen around that are coming from trains and getting down at Diphu Railway Station. These strangers may enter the villages, the police said. Sometimes mentally ill persons without knowing where he/she is going may reach unknown villages.
The O/c also informed that there has been recovery of unclaimed dead bodies. Also some youths taking addictive substances roam at night. Villagers out of fear take them to be child traffickers. The O/c said if villagers happens to notice any unknown person entering the area should not hurt him or lynch, but to hand over to the police. People should not spread rumours to create confusion and fear psychosis in the minds of people. Police are 24 hours on duty to give security and to protect the life and property of the people, Khubung said.
