Kingpin Identified: One Held, Another Gives Up

GUWAHATI, March 17: Police have identified two teachers as the masterminds of the Class 10 question paper leak.

One of them Pranab Dutta has been detained, while the other Kumud Rajkhowa, who was absconding, surrendered before police on Friday.

Addressing mediapersons here on Friday afternoon, Assam director-general of police, GP Singh said that 27 persons, 14 of them adults and 13, who are juvenile, have been arrested. Four others were detained on Thursday.

“We have been able to establish the chain of events leading to the leak of the question papers and circulation. We have enough physical evidence with us in the case,” Singh said.

“One of the masterminds, who is the centre in-charge of Luhit Khabalu High School, Pranab Dutta, has admitted to have leaked the questions papers of General Science (C3) and Assamese to the mastermind, Kumud Rajkhowa, a teacher of Daflakata High School in Lakhimpur district, who in turn had created a WhatsApp group and circulated the questions of the exam in lieu of money,” Singh said.

Singh said the head teacher and centre in-charge of Luhit Khabalu High School of Majuli, Pranab Dutta, is one of the main accused and was detained from the island-district on Thursday.

The other mastermind, Kumud Rajkhowa, a teacher of Daflakata High School in Lakhimpur, surrendered on Friday afternoon, police spokesperson Prasanta Kumar Bhuyan said.

Pranab Dutta also circulated a question paper of the Assamese subject to Kumud Rajkhowa, which was stated to be burnt down.

The DGP said the remnants of burnt question papers have been recovered from the campus of the rented accommodation of Pranab Dutta, and those are being sent for forensic test.

There were question papers of both General Science and Assamese, he said.

He added that the CID is gathering more technical evidence, like details of social media interactions and monetary transactions through e-wallets.

Days after the general science question paper leak of the Class 10 state board exam, the Assamese paper also got leaked, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Thursday evening.

The general science question paper was leaked on Sunday night.
