DIPHU, Oct 13: The Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) of the Jemson Timung faction on Monday submitted a memorandum to Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Tuliram Ronghang, demanding the immediate arrest of all those involved in the killing of Oriwel Timung.
Timung was killed on October 9 in an attack allegedly carried out by miscreants from Lapangat village of Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district at Tapat village in West Karbi Anglong.
The KSA alleged that sporadic clashes have been occurring in the border areas for the past few months, but neither the Assam nor the Meghalaya government has taken the issue seriously.
It urged elected representatives, including MLAs and the CEM, to take up the matter with both state and central governments to bring a lasting resolution to the inter-state border dispute.
The association also demanded a government job for the next of kin of the deceased and that the government bear the medical expenses of the injured undergoing treatment at Diphu Medical College and Hospital.
It further urged that the Assam–Meghalaya boundary be demarcated as per the 1951 government notification, and called for the removal of the Meghalaya Border Outpost (BOP) set up at Am-ih inside West Karbi Anglong.
The KSA also demanded that a new BOP be established at Tapat to strengthen security.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Gorkha Parisangha, Karbi Anglong Regional Committee condemned the brutal killing and expressed deep sorrow over the incident, terming it an inhuman act that has shocked the peace-loving people of the district. The Parisangha said such violence threatens the long-standing peace and harmony among communities in the region, and urged the district administration and the Assam government to provide adequate compensation to Timung’s family and ensure a fair and transparent investigation to deliver justice at the earliest.
