DIPHU, Jan 9: The central committee of the Karbi Students Association (KSA) on Tuesday organised a two-day convention and a Student’s and Youth Unity rally at Diphu Club on January 8 and 9.

Sumit Timung, the general secretary of the KSA central committee, explained that the convention aimed to establish a new body as the existing one had expired per the adhoc committee’s mandate.

Timung said that the adhoc committee, formed on February 9, 2022, was given a six-month extension to manage the KSA central committee.

“However, the term of the adhoc committee expired, necessitating the formation of a new body as the KSA central committee faced a constitutional void,” he added.

The convention concluded with the dissolution of the present body and the induction of 18 new members into the new body. Jensing Timung was appointed as president, and Sumit Timung was re-appointed as general secretary.

However, tensions arose as Timung accused KSA president Thomson Rongpi of leading the association in a disorderly direction.

Later, a Student’s and Youth United rally in the evening saw participation from various figures, including CPI(ML) general secretary Robi Kumar Phangcho, KNCA general secretary Protima Enghipi, KSA former adviser Among Engti, and general secretary Sumit Timung, alongside president Jensing Timung.

In response, a press conference held by KSA president Thomson Rongpi and adviser Laichan Engleng clarified that the KSA Convention and Unity rally were not organised by KSA. Instead, they asserted that it was organised by All India Students Association (AISA), CPI (ML), Students & Youth for Justice (SYJ), and Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA).

Rongpi further criticised the activities allegedly carried out by CPI (ML) and called for an end to attempts to divide the KSA. He emphasised that KSA was formed to stand for the cause of the Karbi society and not for the benefit of any political party.

The Manja branch committee unintentionally participated in the convention, Rongpi stated, and he urged Sumit Timung to return to KSA as he is still the general secretary.

Responding to allegations from Amlong Engti, former general secretary KSA and CPI(ML) leader, KSA adviser Laichan Engleng stated that Engti had contested the KAAC election twice, losing on both occasions. He questioned Engti’s motives in trying to divide KSA, asserting that the CPI (ML) had confined KSA general secretary Sumit Timung for party work.
