MARGHERITA, July 31: In a significant development for the tribal and indigenous communities of the Tirap Tribal Belt under the 83rd Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency in Tinsukia district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that land pattas will soon be issued under the Protected Category.
The announcement, made on Thursday, aims to secure land rights for various ethnic groups, including the Tai Ahom, Moran, Muttock, Chutia, Koch Rajbongshi, Gorkha and others, who have been residing in the region for generations.

These communities will now be formally recognised as Protected Categories for the purpose of land rights, bringing long-awaited relief and legal recognition to their ancestral holdings.
Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, while addressing the media in Margherita, stated that he had been consistently pursuing the matter since 2016 after being elected.
He expressed satisfaction that the Chief Minister’s decision had finally fulfilled a key demand of the region’s indigenous communities.
Sharma also extended his gratitude to the chief minister and termed the announcement a historic milestone that will bring justice and empowerment to the people of the Tirap Tribal Belt.
He described the development as a step toward safeguarding the cultural and territorial identity of the region’s native populations. The move is expected to usher in a new era of stability and development by formally recognising the land rights of longstanding inhabitants and protecting them under the provisions of the Protected Category.
