MARGHERITA, Aug 2: Delegations from the Margherita District Ahom Sabha, Purvanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha, and Tirap Mouza Tai Ahom Bhumi Suraksha Samity called on Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma at his residence in Segunbari on Saturday to express their gratitude for his efforts in securing land pattas for indigenous communities in the Tirap Tribal Belt under the 83 Margherita Legislative Assembly Constituency.
The delegations felicitated the legislator with a traditional Assamese phoolam gamosha in recognition of his role in addressing longstanding land issues affecting the Tai Ahom and other indigenous groups residing in the protected areas of Tinsukia district.
Among those present were Utpal Konwar, General Secretary of Margherita District Ahom Sabha; Loknath Mohan, President of the Purvanchal Tai Sahitya Sabha (Tinsukia district committee); Chandra Kanta Konwar, President of the Tirap Mouza Tai Ahom Bhumi Suraksha Samity; and Tukheswar Gogoi, the organisation’s General Secretary, along with other members.
The delegation thanked the MLA for his “utmost effort and sincere dedication,” which they said played a pivotal role in the Assam Cabinet’s recent decision to grant land pattas under the Protected Category to eligible indigenous communities in the Tirap Tribal Belt.
The Cabinet decision, made on Thursday during a meeting chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, aims to resolve long-pending land rights issues in the tribal belt and block, ensuring land security for residents of the region, including members of the Tai Ahom community.
In their joint statement, representatives from the three organisations extended heartfelt thanks to Chief Minister Sarma, Margherita MLA Bhaskar Sharma, Cabinet ministers, and the BJP-led governments at both the State and Union levels for what they termed a landmark move to safeguard indigenous rights.
Speaking on the occasion, MLA Bhaskar Sharma said, “We feel immense joy in being able to secure land rights for the indigenous people. The public now understands that the BJP-led governments—both at the State and the Centre—are firmly committed to the protection of indigenous communities.”
The move is being widely welcomed in the region, with community leaders calling it a long-awaited step towards justice and security for indigenous populations in protected areas.
