TEZPUR, Sept 22: To commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day, which took place on Thursday, the department of Geriatric Mental Health at the Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Institute of Mental Health (LGBRIMH) in Tezpur conducted an online PG CME (Postgraduate Continuing Medical Education) session dedicated to alzheimer’s dementia. The event featured prominent figures in the field of mental health who engaged in discussions about Alzheimer’s disease.
Leading the discussions during the CME were Professor Dr SK Deuri, the director of LGBRIMH, retired professor Dr Mathew Varghese from NIMHANS Bangalore, and Dr Dipesh Bhagawati, a retired professor and former head of the department of Psychiatry at Guwahati Medical College. These experts shared their insights and knowledge on Alzheimer’s disease.
The online PG CME, organised under the leadership of Dr SK Deuri, the director of LGBRIMH, and Dr Subhashish Nath, who heads the department of Geriatric Mental Health and served as the organising secretary, focused on this year’s World Alzheimer’s Day theme, ‘Never too Early, Never too Late’. The theme emphasised the importance of prevention, early detection, and early treatment of Alzheimer’s.
Postgraduate students and psychiatrists from various parts of the country attended the CME, making it a valuable platform for knowledge exchange and raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.
World Alzheimer’s Day, established in 1994 by Alzheimer’s Disease International and the World Health Organisation, aims to spread awareness about Alzheimer’s globally. The observance of this day on September 21 serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges associated with cognitive decline. Alzheimer’s disease, the most common form of dementia, affects millions of lives worldwide, making it a pressing global health concern.
