Man gets life imprisonment for murdering fellow villager

TEZPUR, June 12: A court in Assam’s Sonitpur district has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering a fellow villager five years ago.

The court of District and Sessions Judge Kaushik Hazarika on Thursday found Tolon Das guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment, while also imposing a fine of Rs 20,000.

The court also directed that failure to pay the fine amount would attract an additional jail term of six months.

According to the prosecution, the incident occurred on the evening of May 14, 2021, in Balijan Kacharigaon in Dhekiajuli police station area in Assam’s Sonitpur district, when a personal dispute led to a violent confrontation.

During the altercation, Das attacked fellow villager Swapnil Das on the head with a sharp weapon, causing fatal injuries.

The following day, the victim’s mother, Shanti Das, lodged a complaint at Dhekiajuli police station, following which police registered an FIR and arrested the accused. (PTI)
