The deceased has been identified as Ranjit Gorh, who was dragged out of his house and trampled to death by a wild elephant. The incident took place on Friday at 2:30 am in the early hours at Seema Pather under Makum Pathar Gaon Panchayat of Margherita co-district.

Seema Pather falls under the Margherita West Range Forest Office of Digboi Forest Division.

The deceased’s house was completely vandalised by the wild elephant, while his family members managed to escape.

After the incident, Margherita West Range Forest Department officials, staff, and Margherita police rushed to the spot, recovered the body, and brought it to the Margherita Police Station.

It is to be noted that in the past, several people have lost their lives in the Seema Pather area due to such attacks, as wild elephants come out from the Upper Dehing Forest Reserve area in search of food.

Meanwhile, in the presence of the Margherita Executive Magistrate, Margherita police have sent the deceased’s body for postmortem at Tinsukia Civil Hospital.

The deceased, Ranjit Gorh, is survived by his wife and four small children.

Local residents of Seema Pather said that a few months ago, two persons died due to wild elephants in this area, and a wild elephant was found dead. However, no appropriate steps have been taken by the Margherita co-district commissioner, Digboi divisional forest officer, and Tinsukia district administration to stop the human-elephant conflict, which is rampantly increasing day by day in the village areas under Digboi Forest Division of Margherita co-district.
