TEZPUR, March 8: In a strong gesture of gratitude towards former soldiers and their families, the Gajraj Corps of the Indian Army organised an Ex-Servicemen Rally at Hem Barua Higher Secondary School in Ghoramari near Tezpur on Sunday. The event brought together thousands of veterans, Veer Naris and their families, reinforcing the Army’s continued commitment to the welfare and dignity of those who once served the nation.
According to Defence Spokesperson Tezpur Lt Col Athul Shreedharan in this rally nearly 4,000 ex-servicemen and family members from Biswanath and Sonitpur districts attended the rally, reflecting the deep and lasting bond between the Army and its veteran community.

The programme was attended by H S Gill, General Officer Commanding of the Blazing Sword Division, who graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Several senior Army officials, representatives from the civil administration and officials from different government departments were also present. Addressing the gathering, the Chief Guest acknowledged the immense contribution of veterans and Veer Naris in protecting the sovereignty and security of the nation. During the event, six Veer Naris—whose spouses made the ultimate sacrifice in service of the country and eight distinguished war veterans were honoured for their courage, dedication and exemplary service. Their stories of sacrifice and resilience continue to inspire younger generations.
To ensure comprehensive support for the veteran community, 46 welfare stalls were established at the venue offering services such as pension assistance, financial counselling, employment guidance, medical support and help with documentation. Pension-related issues were addressed with the support of officials from the Controller of Defence Accounts Guwahati and PCDA (P) Prayagraj. A special help desk for the SPARSH pension system also assisted veterans with digital pension services.
A free medical camp organised during the rally offered consultations in gynaecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and dentistry. In addition, eight wheelchairs and eleven hearing aids were distributed to elderly and disabled veterans. A specially customised tri-scooter was also handed over to a disabled war veteran to help improve his mobility and independence. The rally also hosted a voluntary blood donation drive, collecting around 80 units of blood from soldiers, veterans and local residents. Employment assistance counters further informed veterans about nearly 400 job openings across different sectors.
