GUWAHATI, July 25: The annual lecture on the 6th death anniversary of Sattradhikar Bhadra Krishna Goswami was delivered at a program organised at the Guwahati Press Club on Thursday. The lecture on the topic ‘Philosophy and Sociology of Srimanta Sankaradeva’ was delivered by Professor Dr Nani Gopal Mahanta of Gauhati University.
Sattradhikar Bhadra Krishna Goswami was a social and cultural envoy of Assam renowned for his distinguished contributions to art, culture, and literature. A strong advocate for education, he made significant efforts to acquaint young people with the myriad facets of Sattriya culture. He served as the former Sattradhikar of Jokai Satra and the former president of the Satra Mahasabha, in addition to being a prominent writer and journalist.
Dr Mahanta, the former education advisor to the government of Assam and chairman of Adarsha Vidyalaya Sangathan, Assam, discussed Sankaradeva’s philosophy within the context of Vedanta philosophy. He covered concepts such as Brahman, Paramatma, and Bhagawan, and explored the uniqueness of Sankaradeva’s philosophy in dualism and non-dualism, as well as his concepts of Nirguna and Saguna, and the philosophy of Brahman and social sustainability.
The welcome address was delivered by Mitali Goswami Trochin, the secretary of the Sattradhikar Bhadra Krishna Goswami Memorial Trust and eldest daughter of Bhadra Krishna Goswami. The traditional lamp-lighting ceremony was initiated by his wife, eminent writer Dibya Rekha Goswami. The program commenced with a Sattriya dance performance by internationally acclaimed dancer Ananya Mahanta.
A special release of a portrait of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva by renowned Russian artist Vladimir Trochin was a highlight of the event. Inspired by the Sattradhikar’s enduring love for Sattriya culture, Trochin had previously created seven art pieces preserved at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. This new portrait was inaugurated by eminent social worker and president of Akhil Bharatiya Sahitya Parishad, Assam, Mrinalini Devi. She delivered a heartfelt speech about Sattradhikar Bhadra Krishna Goswami, praised the portrait, and acknowledged Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva’s influence on an international level.
Another esteemed guest of honour was Hemanta Bijoy Mahanta, a prominent writer and retired principal commissioner of Income Tax. He highlighted how Sattradhikar Goswami ardently explored the Neo-Vaishnava tradition, which served as a socio-religious and cultural integral of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva’s beliefs.
Other notable attendees included Mrinali Chowdhary, principal of SBOA School, Guwahati and the youngest daughter of the Sattradhikar, Victor Trochin, Babe Bhuyan, an eminent writer and artist of Sattriya culture, Parijat Handique, who served as the anchor of the ceremony, and Lila Mahanta of Assam Sattradhikar Sabha.
This memorial lecture served as a testament to the lasting legacy of Sattradhikar Bhadra Krishna Goswami and his significant contributions to the cultural and educational landscape of Assam.
