SIVASAGAR, June 21: The publication of the constituency delimitation draft has emanated considerable criticism from political parties, organisations, and individuals in Sivasagar on Wednesday.

Abolition of the Amguri LAC from among the earlier six constituencies of the district has stirred up a hornet’s nest among the electorate of the constituency on Wednesday.

All political parties in Amguri, barring BJP, have vehemently opposed the abolition of the Amguri constituency, considered a citadel of the Asom Gana Parishad, BJP’s political ally in the state.

AGP on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to the Sivasagar deputy commissioner Aditya Vikram Yadav. The sitting MLA from the constituency is Pradip Hazarika.

The organisations representing mostly the Ahom community have vented their ire against the Himanta Biswa Sharma ministry alleging it to be a conspiracy to belittle the political hegemony of the majority Ahoms in the district.

The All Tai Ahom Students Union, Bir Lachit Sena, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Raijor Dal, and a host of other organisations on Wednesday protested against the delimitation draft in Amguri and Sivasagar. The protests have convened a public meeting on Thursday at Amguri Town Committee Hall to garner public support for their protest move against the government.

The CPI, through a release signed by the state secretary Kanak Gogoi, came down on the government decision and alleged that it is a deliberate move of the government to weaken the Ahom community in Upper Assam. It termed CM Sharma as an anti-Ahom leader and demanded immediate rollback of the delimitation draft and go for the same only in 2026 when the rest of the country goes for it.

Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Sivasagar district unit sent a memorandum to the chief election commissioner of India opposing the draft.

The party alleged that the Election Commission is working as per the dictation of a particular political party. AJP demanded the restoration of Amguri as a constituency and rejoining the Ahom-dominated Betbari mauja with the Sivasagar constituency failing which the party will begin a democratic stir against the government.

Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad, Asom( TAYPA) also took out a protest demonstration against the delimitation draft in Sivasagar.

Congress leader of the Amguri Constituency Ankita Dutta strongly protested the abolition of the Amguri Constituency and blamed it on her political rival Pardip Hazarika of the AGP saying that the MLA remained silent when he should have been vocal against the decision and rather he was serious more with the monkey menace in the constituency.
