GUWAHATI, Feb 18: The district commissioner’s conference hall witnessed a significant gathering as stakeholders from various sectors came together to mark the conclusion of National Road Safety Month here on tuesday.
The programme, organised under the chairmanship of district commissioner Mridul Yadav was graced by Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya as the chief guest. The event not only celebrated achievements in road safety awareness but also highlighted the collective efforts of the district in reducing road accidents.
The month-long observance, held from January 1 to 31 culminated with the distribution of awards and commendations to departments and organisations that played pivotal roles in spreading road safety awareness.
The Cachar Police, PWD (Roads), district health department, education department, excise department, and the voluntary organization Netaji Chhatra Yuva Sangstha were recognized for their dedication and impactful contributions throughout the campaign.
The programme also turned the spotlight on young achievers, with students from GC College, Narsing Higher Secondary School, Sonai Nitya Gopal Higher Secondary School, and MC Das College receiving prizes for their outstanding performances in the road safety quiz competition. Their participation underscored the importance of youth engagement in building a culture of road safety.
Further solidifying the district’s commitment to safer roads, the District Road Safety Committee of Cachar distributed essential road safety equipment to key departments, including the superintendent of police, the district transport officer, and the joint director of the district health department. This initiative aimed to bolster enforcement capabilities and promote safer driving practices across the district.
In his address, Silchar MP Parimal Suklabaidya praised the district administration and participating departments for their collective efforts, which contributed to a significant decline in road accident fatalities in 2024 compared to previous years. He attributed this achievement to consistent public awareness campaigns and the enforcement of traffic regulations. The MP called upon all stakeholders to sustain these efforts and continue working together to make Cachar’s roads safer.
Emphasizing personal accountability, Suklabaidya delivered a firm message: “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether during public rallies or private journeys, rules must be followed. I have instructed that anyone found without a helmet in my political rallies should be fined on the spot, without exception. Safety cannot be compromised under any circumstances.”
The event concluded with attendees taking a solemn pledge to uphold road safety measures and work collectively to transform Cachar into a model district for road safety. The gathering resonated with a shared commitment to public safety, ensuring that the momentum generated during National Road Safety Month translates into sustained action on the roads. The event was also attended by the superintendent of police, Numal Mahatto, additional district commissioner, Antara Sen, additional district commissioner,Van Lal Limpuia Nampui,District Transport officer,Ramesh Shyam and other dignitaries.
