SILCHAR, April 18: During the recently-held budget session of Parliament, Silchar MP Rajdeep Roy spoke on various ongoing illegal activities along the India-Bangladesh border and placed a demand before the Centre for the setting up of an Intelligence Bureau (IB) office in Silchar. Elaborating on the issue, Rajdeep convened a media conference in Silchar on Saturday in which he told media persons about the demand and its importance.

Rajdeep claimed that Barak Valley has turned into a ‘breeding ground’ of Maoists and necessary action needs be taken for a crackdown on the seditious activities. Setting up of an IB office under the supervision of an IPS officer will immensely help in reducing the activities and other crimes, Rajdeep said.

He said, “There are international borders in Barak Valley. Along the bordering areas, anti-national/seditious activities and smuggling take place from time to time. Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Modiji and Home minister Amit Shah ji, I am certain that such anti-national activities will be put to rest for good.”

The MP spoke about the Greenfield airport and said, “A particular group has been constantly trying to derail this project for their own vested interests.” He, however, made it clear that his government would not compromise with the development of this region.

It needs to be mentioned here that in the last state cabinet meeting, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the process of acquisition of land for the new airport (in Silchar) in Dolu had been completed and the land would be handed over to the civil aviation ministry by May 10.

Dr Roy during the press briefing also highlighted the various germane issues raised by him during the recently concluded Budget Session of the Parliament. He informed that he has raised the issue of construction of flyovers in areas where there are still unmanned railway crossings. He stated that the Railway minister has given a positive assurance in this matter.

As regards the uncompleted portion of the Mahasadak, MP Dr Rajdeep Roy said that in response to his letter written to Union minister Nitin Gadkari seeking his intervention into the completion of this project, the minister took the matter on a war footing and sanctioned the required amount for this.  He said, “I have received a letter from Nitin Gadkari ji in response to my letter dt 21.12.2021 letting me know that the LoA has been issued on 10.3.2022 for construction of 4-lane between Harangajao to Narimbunglo via Jatinga (50 km approx ) under NHAI at an estimated cost of 1,674 crore. This is a major forward development for the completion of the last remaining part of the MAHASADAK (4-lane Expressway) connecting Silchar to Guwahati. I wholeheartedly thank Nitin ji for his visionary leadership in developing infrastructure in this land-locked Barak Valley.”

The MP further stated that in December 2021, he met Piyush Goyal, Union minister of Commerce & Industry, in New Delhi wherein a threadbare discussion took place between them regarding starting of academic courses in foreign trade in Assam University. He said, “It was a very fruitful discussion and the hon’ble minister Piyush Goyalji sent me to meet the vice chancellor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), New Delhi. As such, I met the vice chancellor of IIFT and put before him the verbal proposal. It was a very fruitful discussion, where the VC asked me to send a formal proposal from Assam University, Silchar for opening a hub of foreign trade there which will be started under the aegis of IIFT, New Delhi.” He was hopeful that the hub would very soon be started at Assam University, Silchar.

As regards upgradation of GC College, Silchar and Karimganj College to full fledged universities, Dr Roy informed that he has already taken up this issue at the appropriate level and will also do the follow up action in this connection.
