Nagaon police busts gang of oil thieves

NAGAON, Jan 23: Nagaon police led by Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Jayanta Baruah busted a gang of oil thieves long involved in stealing oil from oil pipelines and arrested four persons in connection with a recent oil theft case at Barhampur Bherbheri area in the district here.

Subsequently, police also seized two oil tankers laden with several thousand litres stolen oil from oil pipeline near at Barhampur Bherbheri area, a week ago.

According to sources of Nagaon police, the arrested thieves have been identified as Jalaluddin alias Jalu, Pranjal Kunwar, Madhurya Singha of Nagaon and Jiten Gogoi of Makum.

Sources claimed that the gang had stolen oil from an oil pipeline after drilling and transported the stolen oil to Demow in Sivasagar district on January 16 last.

Following the oil theft case, Nagaon police intensified operation against the gang and were able to arrest Jalaluddin and Pranjal Kunwar within hours.

Later Nagaon police, based on statements of Jalaluddin as well as Pranjal Kunwar, arrested Madhurya Singha, the main kingpin of the oil stealing case, from Darangamela in Baksa district while Jiten Gogoi from Makum.
