KOKRAJHAR, Nov 21: A National Seminar on the amendment of Article 280 and the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, aligned with the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill, 2019 was held at the Constitution Club of India, New Delhi on Thursday. The event was organised by the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) to highlight the implementation of the Bodo Peace Accord, 2020 and the need to strengthen financial and administrative powers of the 10 Sixth Schedule councils in Northeast India.
ABSU president Dipen Boro said the seminar served as a platform to press for the passage of the 125th Constitution Amendment Bill during the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The discussions focused on increasing council seats, expanding territorial jurisdiction, granting ST Hill status to Boro-Kachari in Karbi Anglong, provincialising schools, providing ex-gratia to martyr families and enhancing recruitment in army, paramilitary and Assam Police forces.
Guest speakers included Prof Ramesh Bhardwaj, Pramod Boro, Vijay Hansaraj, Sukla Charan Noatia, Pyniad Sing Syiem, Aditya Khakhlari and several other leaders and constitutional experts from across the region. The seminar concluded with a call for a united approach from all Sixth Schedule councils to ensure timely implementation of the Bodo Peace Accord and financial autonomy reforms.
