GUWAHATI, Jan 10: Continuing its commitment to enhance safety and adhere to the Ministry of Railways’ directive to eliminate all level crossing (LC) gates, the NF Railway has made significant strides in fortifying safety measures at manned level crossings within the zone.
The railway zone has adopted a phased approach to eliminate manned level crossing gates, focusing on creating awareness and caution among road commuters. As of December 31, 2023, a total of 13 manned level crossing gates have been successfully eliminated during the current financial year. This achievement includes the construction of 05 Road Over Bridges and providing 08 diversions along different routes in lieu of level crossing gates.
In Assam, the initiative led to the elimination of 04 LC gates in Nagaon and 01 each in Jorhat, Sonitpur, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, Chirang, and Morigaon districts. West Bengal witnessed the closure of 02 LC gates in Malda district, while Bihar experienced the elimination of 01 LC gate in Katihar district during the same period.
To bolster safety measures, NF Railway has implemented caution and signage boards at level crossing gates, featuring statutory warnings that highlight mandatory precautions when the railway gate is closed for an approaching train. In addition to physical infrastructure enhancements, the zone has conducted awareness campaigns to educate road commuters on the importance of adhering to rules and regulations at level crossing gates for their own safety.
