NFR hosts session on AI-driven railway infrastructure and track monitoring

Interactive session explores use of AI, sensors and digital technologies to strengthen railway safety, efficiency and infrastructure management.

GUWAHATI, June 17: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) organised an interactive session on the application of emerging technologies in railway infrastructure management, with a focus on improving safety, reliability and sustainability through artificial intelligence and advanced digital solutions.

The programme featured a virtual presentation by noted scientist, technology expert and IIT Guwahati professor Ashwini K Nanda, who addressed senior railway officials from New Delhi.

The session was attended by NFR General Manager Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, the Additional General Manager, principal heads of departments, departmental heads and senior officers from the headquarters and divisions through video conferencing.

During his presentation, Prof. Nanda discussed an advanced concept titled “Autonomous, Unitary System for Inspection and Monitoring of Permanent Way using Multiple Sensors, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Twins.”

The proposed system envisages continuous monitoring of railway tracks through intelligent sensor networks, predictive analytics and digital modelling tools to assess track health and support proactive maintenance.

He highlighted how the integration of artificial intelligence, advanced sensing technologies and digital platforms could help improve asset management, optimise maintenance planning and enhance operational reliability across railway networks.

Addressing the gathering, Shrivastava emphasised the importance of embracing technological innovation to build a safer, smarter and more sustainable railway system.

He noted that future railway development would require a balanced approach that combines technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

The event also marked the observance of World Environment Day 2026.

A short film showcasing NFR’s environmental initiatives was screened during the programme.

The presentation highlighted measures such as railway electrification, promotion of solar energy, energy conservation, water management, waste reduction programmes, plantation drives and the adoption of eco-friendly practices across railway divisions and establishments.

Officials said these initiatives form part of NFR’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmentally sustainable transportation in the Northeast. NFR stated that it remains committed to adopting innovative technologies and sustainable practices aimed at enhancing railway safety, operational efficiency and environmental stewardship while providing reliable transportation services across the region.
