MORIGAON, Oct 21: The premier voluntary organisation of Morigaon district, Sahai, has been undertaking sustained efforts to reduce human-elephant conflict by repurposing waste banana trees used during the Diwali festival.
Since its establishment, the NGO has been collecting banana trees discarded after the festival and transporting them to Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary and Amchai Sanctuary, providing an alternative food source for elephants and helping to prevent conflict with local communities.
For the past 22 years, volunteers of Sahai have coordinated this initiative, ensuring that the transportation of banana trees to the sanctuaries takes place immediately after the festival.
By channeling the festival waste to wildlife habitats, the organization not only minimizes potential clashes between humans and elephants but also promotes wildlife conservation in the region.
The volunteers collect the used banana trees from households and community areas and transport them to the designated sanctuaries, maintaining the long-standing tradition of community involvement in environmental protection.
Sahai’s continued commitment highlights the critical role of grassroots organizations in mitigating human-wildlife conflicts while fostering awareness about wildlife conservation in Morigaon.
