Biswanath Chariali, July 6: The National Human Rights and Crime Control Bureau (NHRCCB) has written a letter to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, highlighting the need for financial security for journalists in the state. The NHRCCB state president, Nishant Thard, highlighted the crucial role played by journalists as the driving forces behind newspapers, which are regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy.
The letter addressed the issue of the financial well-being of journalists in Assam, stating the challenges faced by journalists in supporting their families with the meagre income they receive. While some journalists receive a monthly salary, most are paid based on the publication of their news items, making it difficult for them to meet their minimum needs.
Recognising the special respect that journalists hold in society, the letter urged the chief minister to provide satisfactory monthly financial assistance to journalists who have chosen media as their livelihood. It highlighted that journalists often refrain from pursuing other income sources, such as businesses, due to the unique responsibilities and expectations placed on them.
The NHRCCB expressed hope that the government would take necessary steps to support the families of those involved in journalism as a profession. It noted that the government has been implementing various schemes to assist citizens across different sections of society and stated that without financial security, journalists continue to serve without mental satisfaction.
The NHRCCB’s letter highlighted the importance of recognising the invaluable contributions made by journalists and ensuring their financial well-being, which is crucial for the smooth functioning of the media industry and the promotion of a transparent and democratic society.
