KHERONI, June 24: In a major political development, more than 1,400 workers from opposition parties, including the Congress and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC), joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during a rally at Hawaipur Higher Secondary School Playground in West Karbi Anglong on Tuesday.
The event, jointly organised by the BJP’s Amreng and Kapili Mandal Committees, was attended by Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Chief Executive Member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, who formally welcomed the new members.
The rally witnessed a turnout of over 5,000 supporters.
Addressing the gathering, Ronghang called for unity among all communities to ensure peace and inclusive development in the region.
He announced plans to build a community hall and stage at the rally venue and highlighted upcoming infrastructure projects in the Amreng and Kapili constituencies under BJP rule.
Pawan Kumar, Member of Autonomous Council (MAC) from 7 No. Kapili, and Executive Member Rina Terangpi of 09 No. Amreng constituency, praised Ronghang’s leadership and the BJP government’s welfare and development initiatives.
The rally was also attended by Lok Sabha MP Amarsing Tisso, MLAs Bidya Sing Engleng (Diphu), Dorsing Ronghang (Howraghat), and Rupsing Teron (Baithalangso), along with KAAC Executive Members, MACs, Board Chairmen, former MAC Chandra Bahadur Chetri, and BJP district office bearers.
BJP West Karbi Anglong District President Radip Ronghang and other senior leaders were present.
Speaking to the media, CEM Ronghang said the opposition’s influence in the hills was diminishing and predicted further defections to the BJP in the coming days.
The mass induction is seen as a significant boost for the BJP ahead of upcoming political challenges in the region.
