KOKRAJHAR, Nov 13: Hundreds of contractual employees of the Panchayat and Rural Development Department staged a sit-in protest at the Titaguri Development Block Office in Kokrajhar as part of a statewide demonstration organised by the All Assam Panchayat and Rural Development Department Contractual Employees’ Association. The protest, now in its second day, has brought normal functioning of Panchayat offices to a halt, affecting administrative work and public welfare services across the district.
The employees are demanding an increase in the minimum monthly salary to Rs 30,000, an annual 10% increment in wages, service security up to 60 years of age and other benefits on par with regular government employees. They stated that despite years of dedicated service in rural development, they continue to face low pay and job insecurity, which has affected their livelihoods and morale.
Protesters expressed their grievances, emphasising that the government must take immediate action to ensure fair pay, job regularisation and better working conditions. They warned that the peaceful sit-in will continue until their legitimate demands are addressed, underlining the critical role contractual staff play in the smooth functioning of rural development projects across Assam.
