NAGAON, Oct 18: The 164th anniversary of the historic Phulaguri Dhewa was observed in Nagaon with solemnity and reverence, honouring the farmers who sacrificed their lives resisting British colonial rule.
The memorial ceremony, held at the Phulaguri Dhewa site, was attended by local MLA Shashikanta Das and Nagaon Deputy Commissioner Debashish Sarma. The event began with the national flag hoisting, a moment of silence, and the lighting of ceremonial lamps in tribute to the martyrs.
In his speech, MLA Das recalled the significance of the Phulaguri uprising, emphasising the resistance against colonial oppression, including bans on afghani cultivation and excessive taxation on riverine lands. DC Sarma highlighted the need to preserve the historical site and educate the youth about its legacy.
A large crowd of residents, officials and organisation members gathered for the tribute, reaffirming their respect for the region’s contribution to India’s freedom movement.
