NAGAON, June 28: Assam Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika on Sunday reviewed key agricultural initiatives in Nagaon district, inspecting ongoing projects and interacting with farmers during a day-long visit organised by the Agriculture Department.
The minister began his visit by inspecting a farmer registration camp at Kathiatoli under the Nonoi Agricultural Development Circle.
He reviewed the registration process and interacted with farmers, highlighting the importance of enrolment for availing benefits under various government schemes.
Later, accompanied by Barhampur MLA Jitu Goswami, Hazarika visited an under-construction special horticulture garden spread over 100 bighas at Kathiatoli and assessed the progress of the project.
The minister also chaired a review meeting with Nagaon District Commissioner Devashish Sarma, District Agriculture Officer Nikhil Narayan Baruah and other departmental officials to discuss irrigation requirements and agricultural development in the district.
As part of the visit, Hazarika participated in a coconut sapling plantation programme organised jointly by the Nagaon District Agriculture Department and the Nagaon Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Borkochari village under the Nonoi Agricultural Circle.
The event was attended by local farmers, agriculture officials and MLA Jitu Goswami.
In a symbolic gesture of solidarity with the farming community, the minister, along with the MLA, the District Commissioner, the District Agriculture Officer and farmers, entered the paddy fields at Borkochari village in Kandali. Hazarika drove a tractor and also took part in paddy transplantation, encouraging farmers ahead of the ongoing cultivation season.
The visit focused on strengthening farmer outreach, promoting horticulture, improving irrigation infrastructure and encouraging greater participation in government-supported agricultural programmes.
