HAFLONG, Jan 13: Former Rajya Sabha member and former chief executive member (CEM) of North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) Prakanta Warisa has accused national, political parties for ignoring the regional issues like Dima Hasao.
Taking part in a meet the press programme, organised by Haflong Press Club at Cultural Institute Hall here on Sunday, Warisa said the national parties are not keen to resolve the issues of tiny communities like Dimasas who have been struggling for its survival for the past several decades.
“The people now understood that the national parties are not working for regional interests. That is the reason why the people are now supporting regional parties,” he said.
Warisa was a leader of Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) but he jumped to the Congress and then to the BJP and in 2016 he had joined the regional Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
He is contesting the council elections from No 1 Haflong MAC constituency on AGP ticket.
“AGP is a regional party. We can take stand on all our basic issues. Presently, AGP leaders are ignored in the state. But I am glad to say that the AGP has been able to gain ground in Dima Hasao and fielded candidates in 24 constituencies of the council,” Warisa said.
As regards to the infrastructure development schemes and programmes, the former MP said that the contractors are not maintaining the quality of works.
His rival congress candidate Daniel Langthasa highlighted water crisis in the hill district, especially in Haflong, and said he would work for construction of at least five water supply plants in Haflong town for supply of safe drinking water to the people.
He also stressed on the need of taking up various skill development programmes in the district for giving job opportunities to the unemployed youths.
Langthasa also promised improvement in quality of education, to preserve local language and culture and take up various programmes for women empowerment.
“If voted to power, I will bat for MAC local area development fund from the council authority. It is important because when people elected their leader and is from opposition they are not given any portfolio, thus the elected member and his constituency are deprived of any developmental schemes. To introduce such local area development fund like of MLAs’ Local Area Development Fund is required.” Langthasa said.
