SIVASAGAR, Jan 21: Tragedy struck in Sivasagar when Anamika Das Rajput (20) of Betbari, who was expecting twin babies, passed away at Sivasagar Civil Hospital before she could deliver. Anamika was admitted on Monday morning due to labor pain.

According to her family, after an initial check-up, she was sent to the maternity ward. The day proceeded normally, but in the evening she complained of a persistent cough. When she developed severe pulmonary edema, she was shifted to the ICU. A Frusemide injection prescribed by the doctor was administered around 10:30 PM, but at approximately 2:00 AM, Anamika began vomiting and soon collapsed.

Her husband, Bitul Das and mother-in-law, Bina Das, raised allegations of medical negligence, claiming that she died shortly after receiving the injection. They lodged an FIR at Sivasagar Police Station. Meanwhile, Sangrami Sena Asom demanded action against the hospital staff, citing other alleged cases of negligence and calling for the intervention of the local MLA and MP.

Dr Sadhan Bora, Superintendent of Sivasagar Civil Hospital, refuted the allegations, stating that no wrongdoing occurred. He explained that the case was complicated due to anemia, pulmonary edema, high blood pressure and the twin pregnancy. Dr Bora also noted that the family should have admitted Anamika at least a week earlier given her pre-existing conditions and that referring her to a distant hospital in a critical state would have been unethical. The MCP report showed that her pregnancy had been regularly monitored at Kheluwa Block Primary Health Centre.

Following the incident, the Sivasagar District Commissioner has ordered an inquiry under the Additional Deputy Commissioner. Additionally, the Joint Director of Health, Sivasagar has constituted a committee of three senior doctors to investigate the matter.
