TEZPUR, April 18: The Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College in Dhekiajuli town has completed fifty years of existence and is celebrating its golden jubilee year from April 20 (Wednesday), owing to which the managing body, faculty members and the alumni have been busy in brisk preparations. It is to be mentioned here that late Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das, the pioneer force behind the establishment of this college was a great educationist who envisaged the need of higher education among the youth of the locality. His determination against all odds to bring the college into existence culminated in what the people have today, a gem of an educational institution which has enlightened many minds till date. The college was established in the year 1970 (July 15) under the aegis of the then SDC of the martyr city Dhekiajuli, Nabadeep Ranjan Patgiri and accompanied by a section of selfless social worker, late Indra Bora, Gargaram Das, Pratap Kalita, Rabindra Nath Bhuyan, Ramesh Chandra Borah, Prajapati Chastri among others. The college was first named as Dhekiajuli College and started its classes with 116 students (night class) at Don Bosco, Dhekiajuli. It was later named after Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das, eminent Gandhian and former education minister of Assam on January 23, 1975.
