JORHAT, Jan 8: People held protests at Kathkatia stretch of the Jorhat-Mariani Road on Sunday after a youth on a two-wheeler vehicle died instantly following a collision, reportedly with a parked truck on the roadside on Saturday night.
The deceased has been identified as Manoj Tanti of a nearby tea garden. The protesters, including women, blocked the road seeking proper compensation to the victim’s family and prohibition of parking of heavy vehicles like trucks on the road in the area, which they alleged was due to transportation of wheat flour to a mill in the said area.
The protesters alleged that the road accident occurred as Tanti could not see the parked vehicle during the night.
According to a source, on Saturday night policemen, including senior officials, arrived at the spot and kept the situation under control as a mob gathered at the accident site and got enraged, and attempted to damage the truck while police was taking the vehicle to the police station.
On Sunday, a large number of police personnel were deployed at the protest site, the source stated.
