GUWAHATI, Feb 5: After nearly three months, Guwahati Police on Sunday busted the gang-of-six involved in the murder of Purabi Dairy distributor Ranjit Bora.
Police have arrested five members of this gang.
The arrested prime accused are Shah Alom Talukdar of Hajo and Sujal Ali of Satgaon, Guwahati.
According to police reports, Shah Alom is a resident of Panjabari and has been in Guwahati for the last 10 years.
Alom is now under the custody of Dispur PS. The other accused, Sujal Ali who worked hand in hand with Shah Alom is now under the custody of Mukalmua PS.
According to reports, other members of the gang – Jaydev Mahanta, Jitu Moni Barman and Haren Patgiri – have also been arrested from different locations.
The sixth accused in the incident has been identified but the details regarding his identification have not been disclosed in the interest of investigation of the case.
The sixth accused will be arrested soon, the police said here.
According to multiple sources, the arrested duo has admitted the fact that they committed the crime using the recovered Hero Glamour bike with a 9mm pistol.
The person presently having the pistol is still absconding.
Substantial evidence has been recovered in connection with the case. The culprits have also confessed about their involvement in other criminal activities that took place in Guwahati, officials said on Sunday.
In a series of social media posts, the Guwahati Police said, “Spl Investigation Team (SIT) of City Police solved the incident of sensational murder of Ranjit Bora (Dispur PS Case No 2479/2022) which took place in front of Purabi Dairy in Nov, 22. The 6 member criminal gang which was behind the incident has been identified.
Shah Alom Talukdar of Hajo, Sujal Ali of Satgaon, Jaydev Mahanta of Noonmati, Jitumani Barman of Satgaon & Haren Partgiri of Bajali were arrested. One member of the gang is still absconding.
Police recovered 1 Black Hero Glamour Bike (AS01 AQ 4064), 1 black helmet, wearing apparel of the accused person, used during the commission of the crime.
The murder weapon used – a 9mm pistol – is being probed for quick recovery.
The gang also confessed to their involvement in multiple other cases of robbery, loot, etc., registered in Paltan Bazar PS, Satgaon PS, Mukalmua PS & Changsari PS.
Further investigation is on.”
Bora, a distributor of Purabi Dairy products in Guwahati, was shot by two criminals in broad daylight in Panjabari area on November 21 last.
The 58-year-old Bora was the owner of a dairy distribution unit in Guwahati.
The incident took place when Ranjit Bora was on his way to deposit cash in the bank. It was a part of his business routine to deposit cash in the ICICI Bank just in front of the Purabi Diary.
The miscreants allegedly fired at him and snatched his bag which had Rs 2.5 lakh inside it.
According to the Dispur police station officials, the victim was immediately rushed to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). However, the doctors declared him dead.
Ranjit Bora succumbed to his injuries around 12:44 pm in GMCH. The victim was a permanent resident of Kahilipara area.
