NAGAON, Nov 28: A herd of over 100 wild elephants has been creating havoc in large areas of Kampur and Barkola in the district, destroying several hectares of paddy fields and crops over the past couple of days.
According to sources, the herd of wild elephants has been spotted in the Tetelisara, Teliaati, Palasha, and Kacharikhanda areas near Kampur, leaving a trail of destruction. The farmers, who had cultivated paddy in the fields, are now too afraid to enter their fields.
It was reported that some farmers who went to their crop fields early on Thursday morning to harvest their crops confronted the herd of wild elephants and luckily managed to escape.
Similarly, the herd of wild elephants has also been spotted in Barkola’s Palengtali area, causing widespread damage to crops. Despite the forest department’s efforts to drive the elephants away, they continue to roam the area, leaving the farmers in a state of panic.
The farmers have urged the forest department to take strong action to protect their crops from the wild elephants, sources added.
