HAFLONG, May 2: The incessant rainfall over the past few days has wreaked havoc in Haflong and its surrounding areas in the Dima Hasao district.
Communication links between Barak Valley, other states and within Dima Hasao have been severed, amplifying the impact of the deluge.
Severe disruptions have been witnessed in train services along the hill section, particularly between Lumding and Silchar, due to landslides. The sinking of the earth below railway tracks between New Jainga Lamppur-Harangajao and Badarpur has exacerbated the situation. Reports indicate water logging, muddy deposits, and submerged tunnels, leading to an indefinite suspension of train operations on this route.
Meanwhile, an accident near Ditekchera under Harangajao Police Station claimed the life of one passenger, Debraj Deb Barman, and left six others severely injured. 30 passengers with minor injuries were admitted to the Silchar Medical College Hospital. Sources said that the accident involved a bus with the registration number ‘AS01NC0243’, which had been bound for Guwahati from Agartala. The driver had reportedly lost control and the vehicle fell into a ditch.]
In addition to transportation woes, heavy rains have disrupted electricity supply in Dima Hasao district, with few electric poles collapsing in Maibang, leading to power outages in the sub-division.
Damage to public health infrastructure, particularly pipelines in the Convent Road area of Haflong town, has been reported. Flash floods were also reported in Ramnagar in Haflong due as a result of waters of the Boro lake overflowing its banks.
Meanwhile, several houses and approach roads in Haflong and various parts of Dima Hasao district have been damaged due to the heavy rain, leading to mudslides.
The district administration has issued a notification restricting public transport movement on Highway No. 27 from Haflong to Silchar due to flooding and mudslides between Jatinga and Harangjao. All educational institutions in Dima Hasao district will remain closed until May 4, and residents have been advised against unnecessary travel for the next three days.
Restoration efforts are underway, with the district administration and railway authorities working tirelessly to repair the damage. However, the restoration of train services may take several hours to days, depending on weather conditions and the extent of the damage.
Despite temporary blockades due to minor landslides, roads such as Haflong-Lanka, Haflong–Lumding, remain open, providing some relief amidst the ongoing crisis. As the situation unfolds, communities in Haflong and Dima Hasao district brace for further challenges posed by the relentless rains.
