Road safety awareness program conducted in Hojai

Collaborative effort aims to reduce accidents and promote traffic ethics

HOJAI, Feb 15: As part of the ongoing Road Safety Month-2024, an awareness program was held at Arunoday Senior Secondary School and GCC Junior College, Rampur, Hojai on Tuesday to enhance road safety awareness among the masses with a resolute commitment to control accident-related injuries and mortality in Hojai district.

The program was jointly organised by Arunoday Senior Secondary School and GCC Junior College, Rampur, Hojai, in collaboration with the District Transport Office, Hojai district. The DTO and enforcement officers of the District Transport Office were government officials present at the program. Students from class five onwards up to eleven, teaching staff, drivers of the school vans, and the principal and chairman of the educational institution participated in the program.

The program began with the felicitation of the government officials by the school authority with tilak and phulam gamosa. Following this, Dr Prodip Kumar Sahoo, the principal of the institution, delivered a speech. Dr Sahoo emphasised the challenges faced by everyone in society regarding transportation in their day-to-day lives. He highlighted the importance of realising road safety to reduce the number of injuries occurring on the roads, emphasising that as part of society, schools must incorporate road safety rules as an inseparable part of education.

Referring to the quote ‘Today’s children are tomorrow’s citizens’, Dr Sahoo highlighted the expectation for a better future and requested government officials present at the program to deliver speeches on road safety for students and teachers, enriching them with valuable information on the topic.

Addressing the awareness program, the DTO, Gautom Barman, stated that road safety is among the top priorities of the administration, and concerted efforts are being made to ensure an efficient traffic management system for the smooth and safe flow of traffic in Hojai district. Highlighting the alarming surge in road accidents and fatalities, the DTO called upon everyone to play a key role in road safety awareness by sensitising people, particularly the youth, about road safety ethics and strictly adhering to traffic rules to save precious lives.

The DTO also said that the objective of National Road Safety Month is to inculcate responsible road behaviour among citizens, making the district a model for traffic management with a commitment to reducing accident-related injuries in the entire locality. They presented statistics on road accidents and the subsequent loss of precious lives, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle this vital concern by working together to change the narrative.

The principal and the district transport officer appealed to everyone present at the program to adhere to everything essential for road safety to minimise incidents in society. The program concluded with students and teachers committing to wear helmets while riding on two-wheelers and to motivate their near and dear ones to do the same, emphasising the value of individual life for each family and society.
