TEZPUR, Sept 23: Union Law and Justice minister Kiren Rijiju on Friday said that the second Kaliabhomora bridge over the Brahmaputra in Assam’s Sonitpur district will play an important role for the army in facilitating communication to the northeastern border.
The bridge will provide a lot of relief to the daily movement of the Indian Army and other security agencies, the Union minister said after visiting the construction site of the second Kaliabhomora bridge as part of his Lok sabha Pravas Yojna.
“This is a vital bridge in Assam leading to strategic areas and will play a very important role in the connectivity between the two banks of Brahmaputra,” he said on Friday.
It has been constructed to ease the heavy traffic in the older bridge, he added.
The bridge will connect Sonitpur on the North bank with Nagaon on the south bank and is around three km long.
He also said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the big budget bridge by next month as construction work is almost complete.
“PM Modi will visit Arunachal Pradesh next month to inaugurate the already completed airport and two hydraulic projects in Arunachal Pradesh,” Rijjiju said.
Meanwhile Prashant Singh, project coordinator of SP Singla Construction Company said that the existing Koliabhomora Bridge is 3.05 km long and the new one is 25 meters longer and wider than the existing bridge.
This is the seventh bridge over the Brahmaputra built by the MS Gemon and SP Singla companies.
The central minister said that the BJP government at the Centre has given priority to the development of the north eastern region.
It is noteworthy to mention that the existing bridge was named after the Ahom General Kolia Bhomora Phukan who initiated the construction of a bridge at the place during the Ahom rule. However, it took six years of continued effort (from 1981 to 1987) for the Koliabhomora Bridge to be constructed and it was officially inaugurated by the then Prime minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi on April 14, 1987.
Union minister Rijiju also visited the historic Bharali Namghar in Kaliabar and participated in various programmes at Nagaon.
