SAFRAI (CHARAIDEO), July 17: In the face of widespread public outrage, renowned anaesthesiologist Dr Surajit Giri of Demow Model Hospital in Assam’s Sivasagar district has withdrawn his resignation and returned to duty.
Dr Giri, popularly known as the “snake doctor” for his critical work in treating snakebite victims, had earlier resigned following an alleged incident of humiliation by Assam Civil Service officer Parishmita Dehingia.
According to reports, the July 11 incident occurred while Dr Giri was attending to a woman in active labour.

He was allegedly summoned by Dehingia, who was serving as a magistrate in Demow, and accused of dereliction of duty.
She reportedly questioned his professionalism and subjected him to an intense verbal reprimand, despite his ongoing emergency engagement at the time.
Dr Giri, who has served the region for 18 years, is widely respected for his tireless commitment to rural healthcare.
He has reportedly treated over 3,000 snakebite victims, conducted more than 7,000 surgeries, and saved more than 1,200 lives—often in high-risk, resource-scarce conditions.
News of his resignation triggered protests and outrage across Assam.
Citizens and civil society groups rallied behind the doctor, demanding a probe into the conduct of the officer and calling for her suspension.
Social media platforms were flooded with messages of solidarity and support for Dr Giri.
Moved by the overwhelming public response, Dr Giri announced his decision to stay on.
“I am deeply touched by the love and support of the people of Assam,” he said, “I will continue serving them to the best of my ability.”
