DIPHU, Nov 10: Representatives of social organisations in Karbi Anglong, including Karbi Anglong Social Development Organisation (KASDO), Karbi Student’s Union (KSU), Karbi Farmers Association (KFA), Karbi Hills Development & Protection Organisations (KHDPO), on Friday called for a total shut down of Diphu market till cancellation of trading license of Roy Bakery in Diphu town. This was announced by representatives of social organisations at a press conference held at Karbi Students Association (KSA) office at Rongnihang on Friday.
Criticising the police and district administration, KSA president Bijoy Bey said the law enforcing agency has not taken any action against proprietor of Roy Bakery even as an FIR has been lodged after 17 people were hospitalised by consuming sandwich purchased from the shop on October 11, last. Bey also condemned the assault of Angtong Engti and said Angtong Engti was innocent victim of the incident.” Karbi Students Union (KSU) president George Timung said stringent action should be taken against the police official involved in the incident. “The assault is condemnable.”
Engti who was present at the press conference said he was beaten up by police at the bakery. “They assaulted me in front of the public eye and abused me inside the police outpost,” Engti alleged.
Notably 17, including seven children, were hospitalised due to food poisoning after consuming sandwiches bought from Roy Bakery on October 11. The next day, i.e., on October 12 several more were hospitalised taking the number of food poisoning victims to 35. However, there is no report on action being taken on the bakery by the authority.
