Tezpur, 12 May: On Monday, the auditorium of the autonomous Darrang College sort of came alive with colourful enactments of Sattriya, Kathak, Bharatanatyam and a bunch of other cultural bits, all under a special programme called “Somoloy”. It was put together by the college’s Performing Arts Centre, with support from the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC).
The event was held at the Bipin Pal Das Memorial Stage inside the college auditorium, and students as well as artistes looked truly enthusiastic. The campus atmosphere turned vibrant, lot of energy in the air, you know. The programme was guided jointly by senior office assistant and theatre artiste Achyut Sharma along with faculty member Dr Julie Bairagi.
It began with the formal inauguration, when retired professor Dr Khageswar Borkakati lit the ceremonial lamp. He presently also works as president of the college’s management and development committee. College principal Dr Palashmoni Saikia, vice-principal Dr Lakkhi Roy, retired vice-principal Pranabjyoti Das and Purnananda Pao were present too, on the occasion, without missing anything.
While speaking at the programme, the guests lauded the attempts of the Performing Arts Centre and talked about how cultural happenings matter in higher education institutions. Dr Arundhati Deka Nath, head of the Performing Arts Centre, shared an overview of the centre’s work before a felicitation session was arranged for several trainers and artistes.
Among those felicitated, there were Sattriya and Bharatanatyam artistes Prerana Baishya and Arupa Patgiri. Kathak exponent Dr Pratibha Sharma was also honoured, as well as singer Manoj Nath, flautist Hirak Jyoti Nath, violinist Dr Sonit Mahanta, plus theatre trainers like Dr Jahanara Begum, Bhuban Sharma, Jitumoni Dev Choudhury, Gautam Pathak, Diganta Kumar Bhuyan and Achyut Sharma.
Later, the cultural night unfolded with a set of performances—group Sattriya dance, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, flute recitals, tabla ensemble, and musical presentations coordinated by Manoj Nath. There was also a short play performed by students.
