TEZPUR, Dec 18: A team of government officials led by Sonitpur District Commissioner Ananda Kr Das on Wednesday visited the encroached areas of land earmarked for compensatory afforestation of Burha Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary under Sonitpur district.
The inspection team included the Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue), Sonitpur, Divisional Forest Officer of Nagaon Wildlife Sanctuary and Circle Officers of Tezpur, Thelamara and Dhekiajuli, along with their respective staff.
During the visit, it was found that around 6,200 bighas of land, which had already been allocated for compensatory afforestation of Burha Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary, is currently under illegal occupation. The encroached land has been used for constructing dwelling houses and for agricultural activities.
Officials stated that earlier, based on joint verification carried out by revenue circle offices and forest department officials, notices had been served to the encroachers directing them to vacate the government land. However, even after nearly one month since the notices were issued, the encroachers have failed to vacate the land. In view of the situation, the District Commissioner, along with his team, visited the area to assess the ground reality. During the inspection, the DC interacted with the encroachers and urged them to vacate the land allotted for compensatory afforestation at the earliest.
