Sonitpur sets up 886 booths for Pulse Polio drive

TEZPUR, June 27: Sonitpur district has completed preparations for the upcoming National Immunization Day (NID) Pulse Polio campaign, with 886 vaccination booths and 55 mobile teams set to cover more than 1.49 lakh children below the age of five.

The second meeting of the District Level Task Force for the Pulse Polio Programme was held recently at the Office of the Joint Director of Health Services in Tezpur under the chairmanship of Additional District Commissioner (Health) Kuldip Hazarika.

The meeting was attended by District Immunization Officer Dr Tutumoni Handique, Sub-Divisional Medical and Health Officers, Medical Officers from various Block Primary Health Centres, the District Information and Public Relations Officer, National Health Mission officials, Block Programme Managers and other health functionaries.

Reviewing the district’s preparedness, Hazarika directed officials to ensure effective implementation of the three-day campaign, which will be conducted from June 28 to 30.

Health officials informed the meeting that 886 Pulse Polio booths have been established across the district to maximise coverage of eligible children.

In addition, 30 transit vaccination points will operate throughout the campaign to immunise children on the move, while 55 mobile teams will visit remote and underserved areas.

The campaign will begin on June 28 with booth-based vaccination, followed by house-to-house visits on June 29 and 30 to vaccinate children who miss the first day and ensure that no eligible child is left uncovered.

Transit vaccination activities will continue throughout the campaign period.

All Anganwadi Workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) will participate in the drive.

The district has identified 1,49,045 children below five years of age as the target population for administration of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV).

The meeting was also informed that Dr Anuradha Borthakur has been appointed as the State Observer and will monitor the implementation of the Pulse Polio programme in Sonitpur.

The district administration and the Health Department appealed to parents and caregivers to ensure that all children below five years receive the Pulse Polio vaccine by visiting the nearest vaccination booth on Sunday, reaffirming the collective commitment to achieving a polio-free India.
