Sonitpur wraps up month long road safety program

TEZPUR, Feb 13: The month-long road safety program, themed ‘Road Safety-Life Safety’, organised by the Sonitpur District Transport Department, will conclude on Wednesday. The initiative, in line with similar efforts across the state, witnessed a series of awareness programs held in various public spaces and educational institutions since its inauguration on January 14.

As part of the concluding festivities, an awareness rally coursed through the streets of Tezpur town on Tuesday. District commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra formally inaugurated the rally from the District Transport Office (DTO) premises, with the presence of key figures including DTO Amal Kumar Baruah, secretary of the Road Safety Committee Abhijit Medhi, president of the All Assam Motor Transport Association Ratul Sarmah, retired professor Gahan Mahanta, president of Sonitpur District Private Transport Association Dadul Nath, motor vehicle inspector (MVI) Padmalochan Hazarika, retired transport officer Abhijit Baruah, enforcement inspector Krishna Kanta Chetia, and assistant enforcement inspector Parag Baruah, among others.

Preceding the rally, an awareness meeting was convened at the Tezpur Sahitya Sabha Bhawan under the aegis of the district commissioner. DTO Amal Kumar Medhi outlined the aims and objectives of the Road Safety Month, along with the collaborative efforts with the district police administration throughout the program’s duration.

Addressing the gathering, additional SP Madhurima Das emphasised the urgent need to address the escalating accidents in the district through regular awareness programs targeting both motorists and the general populace.

DC Deba Kumar Mishra, in his remarks, underscored five crucial safety guidelines: ‘avoid over speed’, ‘use of helmet while riding two-wheelers’, ‘avoid driving under the influence of alcohol’, ‘use of seat belt while driving’, and ‘avoid using mobile phones while driving’. He urged parents to resist providing motorcycles to their children upon request, emphasising the importance of responsible driving habits.
