NAGAON, April 28: “A Doll Made Up of Clay”, a student film directed by Kokob Gebrehaweria Tesfay and produced by Sahil Ingle, has been selected for La Cinef at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025.
The film is one of 16 entries chosen to be featured in this year’s event.
A zero-budget project from the Producing Department at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI), the film was created without any financial resources, aligning with its creators’ intent to demonstrate the power of storytelling even without significant funding.
Tesfay, an Ethiopian filmmaker, drew inspiration from the storytelling traditions of his grandfather.
The film follows Oluwaseyi, a young Nigerian footballer who sells his father’s land to pursue a career in football in India.
However, his dreams are shattered when a devastating injury ends his career.
The music for “A Doll Made Up of Clay” was composed by Himangshu Saikia, a music composer based in Nagaon, Assam.
In an interview, Saikia shared his excitement about working on the project.
“It was fun working on this project. It was exciting because I was exploring a genre I had always wanted to try but never had the chance to. At first, I was a bit confused about the approach, but as I worked on it, the composition grew fuller, complementing the film, and the team loved it,” he said.
The technical team behind the film includes Vinod Kumar as Director of Photography (DOP), Mahmud Abu Naser for editing, and Soham Pal for sound recording and design.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13 to 24, where “A Doll Made Up of Clay” will be showcased at La Cinef.
